We all know George Clooney isn’t just an incredibly successful actor and Casamigos tequila entrepreneur, but he’s also a really great friend. When GQ asked George Clooney why he chose to give the very extravagant gift to his friends, he mentioned that at the time, he was single and getting older. He didn’t have expectations that he would get married and have a family. With that, he realized what he did have, and that was this group of guys who’ve helped him in some way in a period of 35 years.

He continued to talk about how he’d sleep on their couches when he was broke and how they loaned him money when he needed it. All of those friends had helped him whenever he needed it over the years, and so had George. He mentioned that they’re all good friends.

George thought to himself and realized that if it wasn’t for them, he wouldn’t have anything that he has today. He also said that if he were to get hit by a bus, those friends would be in the will, so why should he wait to get hit by a bus?

George Clooney presented the gifts in cash inside of luxurious Tumi briefcases. He told GQ that he found a place where they stored pallets of cash in Los Angeles, CA, he rented an old florist’s van and managed to pick up the money.

Once he invited his friends over, he held up a map and started pointing to all the places that he’s been able to go in the world and all that he’s been able to see because of them. He asked them, “How one can repay people like that?” George then proceeded to tell them that it could be done by giving them a million bucks.

When he was asked by other rich people why he would do something like that, he asked them why they wouldn’t do that and even called them a “schmuck.”
