You want one to be able to fit inside the other so that it sticks out at an angle; the bottoms should fit together perfectly. Then, pull the inside box out at an angle; the part where the boxes no longer overlap is where you are going to cut the front (inside) box. Then, spray paint both pieces and let dry. Reassemble the hanging file and hold the sides in place with an extra piece of tape. Now, tape all the cut edges with black masking tape. Finally, decorate and add the hanging ribbon.

The molding is to the ceiling what your baseboards are to the floor. They are usually so high up that cleaning them would require a ladder and more work than you care to do. But if you just take a broom and tie a rag around it, then you have the ability to clean those high spaces without all that.

Your mileage may vary depending on the sturdiness of your broom and the type of cleaning agent you use on your rag, but ultimately, this is a good way to give the molding a quick clean when you don’t want to climb up there for the really intensive stuff.

A disorganized refrigerator is a pain for anyone. When we’re hungry, we don’t want to spend time rifling through the fridge to find things. But if you have some plastic drawers at home, then those can save the day. Just insert them right into your fridge.

By doing something so simple, you can make it much easier to store a pretty large variety of snacks and treats. At any rate, it’ll save you a lot of space, even if the addition of a big box of drawers doesn’t make it seem as such right away.

Baking soda, glitter, sugar, salt, you name it: all can benefit from a jar that lets you sprinkle them in moderation. Making your own such jar isn’t all that difficult, either. All you need is a canning jar and one of those lids from a parmesan container.

Granted, you could also just reuse your parmesan containers after you wash them out well enough that they don’t smell like cheese anymore. Either way, it’s a great choice if you want the ability to sprinkle things in moderation, whatever those things may be.

If you keep a pacifier for your baby in the same bag as the diapers (dirty or otherwise) you may feel a little uncomfortable with the thought of cleanliness, or lack thereof. In order to remedy this, the best thing to do is simply have a small plastic container to put the pacifier in.

Needless to say, most everyone has a small plastic container in their house somewhere, so this is one of those hacks that is very easy to achieve if you just check your kitchen storage. And really, that’s a small price to pay for child safety, right?

Do you have a number of candles with wicks too low to easily reach with a match or a lighter? There’s another way to go to town. All you need is some dry spaghetti, straight out of the box. It actually burns quite easily, which makes it useful as a really long match.

You can use this to reach those wicks that are far down at the bottom of the candle jar if need be. And unless you really don’t like pasta, then you probably have spaghetti around in your house. If not, you’ll probably get some at some point anyway.

Need an armband? Have a sock with holes in it? Cut the toes off of that bad boy and suddenly you have a useful armband ready to go. You can use it to hold a phone, or just to wear as a fashion statement, or whatever else you might need something like that for.

One way or another, it’s a much better thing to do than simply throw away such a sock, since doing that wouldn’t benefit you at all. Might as well use hacks like this one to make the most of your possessions, right? We certainly think so.

If you need more counter space, the best thing to do is get stuff off of your counter. But if there’s nowhere else to put them, what do you do? The best thing you can do is create space in the air. To do this, you would attach hooks to the bottom of your cabinets.

By doing this, you can hang a number of things from the cabinets above the countertops, which makes for a lot more available room on those countertops. Easy hacks like these are one of the best ways to clean up your kitchen and make more room.

If you wish to obstruct someone looking into your window but not sacrifice any light to do that, consider this hack. With just a handful of common ingredients that you probably have lying around your home, you can create a semi-transparent covering for your windows.

All it takes is a cornstarch and water mixture, which you apply over either white paper or even lace. Once it dries, you’ll have a semi-transparent covering that lets light in, even though you can’t see through it. Just hang it over your windows.

If you don’t like flush-mounted ceiling lights, there’s actually a pretty easy way to take care of the problem that relies on little more than a lampshade. You probably have one of those around your house, though you may have to strip a lamp to get one.

The idea is to let light through while hiding the ugly fixture. A lampshade is something you could use, but you could also use cloth or lace, plastic baskets, a sheer umbrella or many other items. Experiment with things you have around the house!

Have you ever had a remote with a loose or messed up battery coil? Trying to power the thing becomes a serious hassle when the battery itself won’t fit properly. Thankfully, there’s a way to fix this without using anything outside of your home.

All you need is aluminum foil. Aluminum is a conductor of electricity, and a tiny piece of it between the battery and the loose coil will solve the problem. You could technically do this to use small batteries not intended for use with a product, but we don’t recommend that.

Do you wish there were more hacks out there that tackle the issue of scrubbing a bathtub? Believe it or not, a broom is good enough for the job. If you have a clean one, you can pour some water and dish soap in your bathtub and just start scrubbing away.

It’s not only very effective, but it also ensures that you don’t have to bend over all that much to get the cleaning done, so it’s better for your body as well. This hack will make the whole experience less grueling and frustrating.

While it’s nice to keep one’s lawn nice and green, but buying sprinklers and other such garden tools can be pretty expensive. Rather than investing in something like that, you can make your own sprinkler with something as simple as a plastic bottle.

Punch some holes in a bottle with whatever you feel like and in any pattern you want. Then you just have to tightly tape the bottle to the neck of your water hose (preferably with the waterproof variety!). As long as you secure it properly, you’ll have your own running sprinkler whenever you turn the water on.

Most everyone orders packages these days, and those packages come in cardboard boxes. That cardboard can be used for many hacks people often don’t consider. For instance, you could cut up the cardboard and use the pieces to make your own dividers.

You could use these in drawers to help organize your clothes, accessories, or just about anything else. There are lots of things you can do with cardboard that people just ignore or simply don’t think about. Try to get creative with it!

If your knives are getting a bit rusty, all you really need to get rid of the rust is to soak them in some lemon juice, which is a pretty common household product. Just let them sit in the liquid overnight and you’ll find that the rust wipes right off the following day.

Of course, you can do this with just about any silverware while you’re at it. No need to settle for just your knives. Lemon juice is a pretty powerful cleaning agent if you know how to use it or what to use it with. Keep that in mind!

Have you suffered from a ladle or spatula falling into a pot when you really didn’t want it to? Sure, most of us have. But with a simple hack that merely uses a clothespin, you can stop that from happening. Just tack it onto your utensil and let it rest against the pot.

This will efficiently and quite easily keep the utensil from falling into the pot, which saves you a lot of trouble at very little expense. Needless to say, hacks that don’t require a lot of time or effort are some of our favorite ones.

So you want to serve some chips at a gathering, and that means you need dip. But what’s the best way to provide that dip? If it’s on the plate itself, you’re wasting space that could be used for more chips. This is where the martini glass comes in.

By using a martini glass, you can still present a respectable amount of dip, but at the same time, it doesn’t take up as much space on the plate, which means there’s more room for chips. This is one of those hacks that helps you get the best of both worlds.

Cleaning the blinds for your windows can be a drag, but there are hacks available to make this task less of a pain. All you need is a sock. Wear it like a sock puppet and you can easily dust both the top and the bottom of the blinds with ease.

Sure, this means you’ll get a sock dusty, but that’s nothing a quick wash can’t fix. That being said, this falls into the category of hacks that are quick, easy, and pretty efficient. Naturally, that makes it one of our favorite hacks out there.

If you have more switches in your rooms than you can keep track of, you probably find yourself fumbling for which one does what every single time you use them. Hacks for this kind of problem are actually pretty simple: just label the darn things!

Whether that’s with marker, color coding, or something else entirely, you may as well label your switches if there are enough of them to confuse you. Everyone has something they could use to achieve this, so it’s a great hack in our book.

If you need to clean a blender, there’s always the unpleasant notion of putting your fingers down near the blades. However, you could just use the blender to clean itself. Put hot water and soap in the blender and just let it rip. Unless you’ve got really stubborn gunk, it’ll do the job.

At the least, it’ll make it much easier to clean the blender after the spin cycle is done. Whatever you have left to get rid of will come off much more easily at the very least. And of course, you don’t need to get anything you don’t already have to do this.

Filling a vase with something or one reason or another? Well, by the basic laws of physics, if there’s less space to fill, then you won’t need as much filler. To make that happen, simply put a solid object inside the vase first. A wine bottle is a pretty common and ideal choice.

Doesn’t really matter what you want to fill the vase with, and it also doesn’t make much of a difference what object you want to put in the vase. That makes these kinds of hacks even better, because they are extremely versatile.

Looking for somewhere to put your toothbrushes where they can’t be seen by anyone? Well, it may require a bit of modification to your cabinets, but it is perfectly possible to do this: you can cut little notches into your cabinets to hold your toothbrushes out of sight.

This is quick and easy to do it you have the right tools at home, and the right tools are pretty varied. You could use power tools, hand tools, just about anything to achieve this, and chances are, you have some of those tools available to you in your home.

Remember when we mentioned the potential value of clips? You can use it for more than just keeping your utensils out of pots. You can also use them to stop yourself from whacking your thumb when hammering in nails, perhaps for those pictures we mentioned earlier.

On the other hand, you could use something a little sturdier, such as pliers. Either object will work reasonably well as far as keeping you safe from a painful whack to the thumb is concerned. And at any rate, it’s a whole lot better than nothing.

Everyone has duct tape in their house: or at least, they most certainly should. Assuming you do, you can actually use that duct tape to open stuck jars and the like. All it requires is a little bit of knowledge on how to do the technique, which we’ll share.

Wrap the duct tape around the lid and fold it so it is stuck to the side and the top of the lid. Then pull at a 90° angle or so. We won’t proclaim that this works on literally any lid, but for some of the tough ones you just can’t get open, it’s worth a try.

When you dust a ceiling fan, most of that dust just falls right back into the air, which doesn’t do a whole lot of good for anyone. In order to solve this problem, you can use a pillowcase. With this pillowcase, you can dust the ceiling fans, and the dust will fall into it instead of into the air.

Of course, you’ll have a dirty pillowcase that needs washing, but you can throw that in the washing machine and call it a day. It’s a much better alternative to getting a bunch of dust in the air, which negates the point of dusting in the first place.

We all know that Crayons on walls are really hard to clean. Parents of young children, especially. Cleaning them may be a pain, but there are many hacks out there that can save the day. This one only requires a blow dryer, though there’s not much to actually talk about.

Using a blow dryer to heat up the wax on the wall will make it much easier to wipe it off. In fact, all you would need to do at that point is wipe the warm crayon wax away with a wet and soapy washcloth. The only downside is that it might get a little warm.

Shower curtain hooks can often catch on shower curtain rods. It’s not a huge deal, but it is pretty annoying nevertheless. That said, there’s a pretty easy solution: just rub down that rod with some wax paper, which is something you probably have at home.

This will make the curtain hooks slide much more easily on the curtain rod, which will solve the problem quite readily for you. It’s quick and easy to do, and can be taken care of with just one sheet. That’s why it’s one of our favorite hacks.

When a sponge gets crusty and tough, you may be inclined to throw it out. We don’t blame you, since a sponge in such a shape does seem like something that wouldn’t be ideal for cleaning. But you don’t have to just throw them away when a sponge gets like this.

Just throw them in the dishwasher for a cycle. This will breathe some new life into your sponge and mostly reverse that crusty and stale state of being, making them perfectly viable for use for an extended amount of time. Sponges aren’t expensive, but why waste money at all?

This hack is one most everyone is aware of: they say if your phone gets wet, you should bury it in a bag of rice overnight. Thing is, this hack is worth mentioning because, as silly as it sounds, it does actually work sometimes. That’s not to say that it is guaranteed to, but there are many examples of rice successfully saving water-soaked phones.

So if your phone suffers from such a fate, you should at least give it a try before throwing it away or taking it to a repair shop. After all, phones and phone repairs are extremely expensive!

Creating space in your refrigerator isn’t particularly easy. However, with some easy hacks, you can change that. If you have wire shelves in your refrigerator or freezer, you can use those little clips most people have to hang products from those shelves and create more space overall.

Do you have a lint roller? If not, it’s pretty cheap, and there’s something you could use it for other than lint. You can actually use it to dispose of bugs and nasty critters like scorpions. Think about it: you can squish the pest without touching them, the sticky part picks them up.

Then you can just tear that part off and get rid of it however you want to. It’s a pretty solid way to get rid of things you would really rather not get that close to. And we imagine that a whole lot of people fall into that category.

If you have makeup brushes, chances are you have elastic hair ties. And if you do have elastic hair ties, you can make use of this hack. Loop your elastic hair ties around a towel bar, and you can secure your wet makeup brushes to it for air drying.

By air drying, you avoid using a cloth, and more importantly, avoid deforming the shape of your favorite brushes. And if you don’t have any hair ties for some reason, they are super cheap to get, so this is still one of those great nifty hacks.

People tend to come home with a large number of plastic bags when they go grocery shopping. However, you don’t actually need to throw them away or just stuff them in a corner somewhere. There are other alternatives: namely, you could store them all in a tissue box!

But it doesn’t have to be such a hassle! Using paint, nail polish, or even just colored tape, consider color-coding your keys.

Keeping track of a color code is much easier than keeping track of individual keys that all look the same with the exception of some individual markings or numbers. And the best part is, there are multiple ways to color code your keys.

If you have a clogged drain, be it the bathtub or the kitchen sink, there are many hacks out there that can help. This one uses coffee grounds. Simply mix some coffee grounds with dish soap and pour it down the drain. After that, pour some boiling water down the drain, and this will get rid of most clogs.

Of course, this does mean you would be sacrificing some coffee grounds for the sake of cleaning, but coffee grounds aren’t particularly expensive, so is it really a big deal? It’s certainly much better than keeping a clogged drain.

Desk cables often have a tendency to become tangled and messy! And that can cause you a lot of trouble when you’re looking for the cable you need. Luckily, binder clips can come in handy here.

As you can see in the picture, all you have to do is attach a few in a row at the edge of your desk; one clip for one cable. The clips will tightly hold your cables whilst keeping them organized. How nifty!

Cables are highly useful, but they can also cause headaches at times! They tend to break or wear out after a few years of regular use. We all own a few broken and worn-out cables, which we try to work with because laptop and smartphone charging cables don’t come cheap.

There’s an easy solution for this. Use the spring from an old pen as a cable protectant. Like this picture, use the spring to keep your charger from bending and eventually breaking.

Vacuums are highly efficient. Ever wonder, if you could clean your electronics with it the way you do your room? Cleaning spray obviously is useful to clean the screen or broader surfaces, but it can’t wipe out long-accumulated dust from charging ports, phone microphones, or computer keyboards.

Use a cool life hack here. You will just need your vacuum cleaner and a top from a squeezy ketchup bottle. Attach the top to the vacuum pump, as shown in this picture. The vacuum will suck out all the dirt and dust from the nooks of your devices.

Charging your phone can be a hassle if the outlet is too high, and the cable is too short — because, unless you have a surface to set it on, your phone will just hang there. This can, in turn, damage the cable or plug itself.

Instead of resorting to this option, grab an empty plastic bottle and a pair of scissors. Cut the bottle into a pocket of sorts, which you can then use to store your phone while it charges. Not too shabby, eh?

As nice as it is to use a sponge or loofah in the shower, there’s no denying that these products sit and inevitably become a breeding ground for bacteria — that is, unless you hang them up.

There are plenty of ways to do this, but one of the easiest is to install a secondary tension rod in your shower. From there, you can attach any product you want using the rings with clips that are normally used for an ordinary shower curtain.

Keeping your earphones neat and organized is essential, especially when you’re on the go. Headphones can wear out quickly and the long wire makes it almost impossible to keep them untangled when you’re not using them.

Although many shops throughout the world have slowly been making the move over from plastic bags to paper. Still, there are plenty of stores that are keeping with the old ways and so, you end up collecting more plastic bags than you know what to do with! But, how do you organize them all?

To make these bags easy to stow, create a dispenser using a discarded two-liter soda bottle. Cut off the top and bottom with a razor knife. Trim any jagged edges before screwing the dispenser to a cabinet door or closet wall.

Most people sweep the house every day or every other day. But, every time they do, clumps of dust and hair annoyingly collect at the ends of the broom’s bristles — and it can be really hard to clean!

So, to combat this issue, simply hot glue a wide-tooth comb to the top of the dustpan (as shown in the picture). Every time you sweep dirt into the dustpan, run the bristles through the comb to remove excess gunk.

So, here’s your solution. After popping the microwave popcorn, just separate the opening of the bag a bit. Then, turn the bag upside down and shake it over a bowl. The small opening will allow the unpopped kernels to fall right out.

Don’t waste your time and money buying a toilet bowl cleaner if you don’t need one. And trust us, you don’t need one. You can use mouthwash to do the job. Pour some mouthwash in the toilet bowl, let it sit for about 30 minutes before scrubbing.

Nearly any grime within the toilet bowl will come off very easily after this treatment. And as you know, mouthwash is a lot cheaper than dedicated toilet cleaning agents, so you save a bunch of money with hacks like these, and those are the best kind.

If your fitted sheets are constantly coming off of your mattress, the solution may be available within your closet. If you have a pair of elastic suspenders in there, you can use them to attach the separate sides of the fitted sheet under your bed.

By doing this, you ensure that the fitted sheet will actually stay fitted, unless something happened to the suspenders themselves. Either way, this is a cheaper way to do this than investing in those official elastic connectors you could get specifically for this purpose.

No one likes to have some sort of liquid from the trash dripping on them on trash day. There is a way to avoid this though, and it just requires some paper. Paper towels, newspapers, anything will do fine. Place that paper at the bottom of a new bag before you fill it with anything else.

When you do this, any liquid that goes into the trash bag will be caught by the absorbent layer you created, and you won’t have anything nasty dripping on you when you take the trash out at some undisclosed point in the future. It’s worth some paper to make that happen.

Do you live with someone who just can’t open doors like a normal person? Does the doorknob constantly hit your wall? A tennis ball can be a solution, as all you have to do is cut a slit into the ball and fit it over the problematic knob, creating a cushion.
