Amazing Historical Photos That Offer a Unique Perspective on the Past

This article appeared in Cleverclassic and has been published here with permission.

Amazing Historical Photos

When you think about the past, sometimes it’s hard to picture the words you heard or read accurately. However, as far as recent history goes, we have a little help with that. After all, since the invention of the camera, we have a few first-hand accounts of what was happening in the past. These historical photos might really change your perspective on everything!

A Familiar Likeness

Family genetics can often be really strong, which is why you might notice that a child has their parents’ features or that two siblings look alike. Even if you go a few generations back, you might see signs of your features in your ancestor.

A Familiar Likeness

This person overlapped their profile with their great-great-great-great grandmother’s whose picture was taken back in the 19th century. It looks like the pair still look a lot alike, even centuries apart!

Sweet Sixteen

Today, it’s easy to share pictures of yourself with your friends and family. All you have to do is snap a picture and upload it to social media.

Sweet Sixteen

For another perspective on their teen years, though, don’t be afraid to check out the family photo albums! This person just celebrated their 80th birthday but she also took a moment to share a picture of her when she was only 16 years old. What a put-together picture!

Shocking Fashion

Fashion has always been a widely debated topic. What’s appropriate for a certain situation and what comes down to personal preference can vary from situation to situation.

Shocking Fashion

In retrospect, these women don’t look too shocking. Yet, Les Nouvelles Meirveilluses in the spring of 1908 shocked the watching crowd at Paris’ The Longchamp Racehorse. While these outfits don’t look too scandalous now, they were called a “monstrosity” by some at the time!

Helping Out

When you read about history, you might not read about everyday life. After all, the people in this picture weren’t creating some ground-breaking invention, for example.

Helping Out

On the other hand, it seems like this person directing traffic was more than happy for the chance to help this mother cat. This photo was taken in 1925 and it’s just what it looks like – this officer is stopping traffic so that this cat and the kitten she’s carrying get across safely.

Never Leave a Dog Behind

There are some sights that will always tug at your heartstrings, and a dog lost and without a home is definitely one of those things. This is a picture of Camberley Kate, taken in 1962.

Never Leave a Dog Behind

The dogs surrounding her are strays that she took in. She was known to never turn a dog away and, during her life in England, she took care of 600 dogs or even more. We’re sure these dogs appreciated it!

A Lot of Coordination

At first glance, you might think that this photo is an ad or something carefully designed in PhotoShop. This is actually more practically pulled off than you think. Ormond Gigli was a photojournalist and the person who put this together.

A Lot of Coordination

Gigli found 43 women to model for the photo and carefully dressed them in colorful dresses and organized them with the entire front of a New York City brownstone as the set. Girls in the Windows was one of his most famous pieces.

Miss America

The Miss America Pageant is something that’s familiar to almost anybody, even if you aren’t interested in watching pageants play out. Like many things, there are a few key achievements that have happened over the course of Miss America’s history.

Miss America

In 1971, the cast of the pageant included Cheryl Browne who would debut with the title of the first African-American contestant as Miss Iowa, beating out 19 white contestants to earn the title.

9-to-5

There are some celebrities that are so famous, you hear about them when they’re at their height and they manage to stay known decades later.

9-to-5

Dolly Parton is definitely one of those stars who haven’t gone down in popularity after decades in the spotlight. In fact, you see her so much now, you might not really recall what she looked like when she was younger. This picture was snapped of the music queen in the late ’60s.

Old Hollywood

There are some eras that really make you think of glitz and glamour. Hollywood has always had a certain charm to it to the outside world.

Old Hollywood

After all, not many people can think of anything more glamorous than fancy gowns, bright lights, and glittering jewelry. One star that really made their name in Old Hollywood was Sophia Loren. Here she is back in 1955 – Loren was really representing beautiful fashion in this photo!

Silent Films

Before you would go see movies with award-winning dialogue, people went to see movies that featured no dialogue at all. Yet, stardom was still around at the time.

Silent Films

If you were a bit of a cinephile in the 1920s, you might have seen this actress, Delores Costello, come across the screen. The actress was celebrated for her roles in silent films. If you want a bit of Hollywood history, she’s also the grandmother of current-day actress, Drew Barrymore!

Making Friends

When you think of friends in your household, you might count your pets. After all, who doesn’t like snapping a picture of your pet at its cutest?

Making Friends

As it turns out, that’s a human behavior that predates social media. Why wouldn’t it? After this dog learned a new trick, the three children he lived with couldn’t help but see an opportunity for a cute picture. It was originally taken in 1930 but remains cute to this day.

It’s an Event

Nowadays, when you want to get a picture of yourself, you just have to whip out your phone. Still, you want to look your best.

It’s an Event

But back in the day, if you had to go get your portraits taken rather than just snapping one on the go, you’d really go all out. This woman was dressed to the nines for this portrait session. It’s not clear when the photo was taken but it was likely between 1890 and 1910.

Capturing Her

A lot of pictures of the past really give us an idea of what people looked like, what they wore, and more. After all, the photo evidence is right in front of our very eyes.

Capturing Her

This person’s name was Helen and she was only 16 years old in 1913 when this photo was taken. She would live to be 90 years old in 1987, more than 70 years after this photo was taken.

Multi-Generational Photos

There are plenty of families that see multiple generations in the span of a lifetime. It seems that it didn’t take long for family photos to catch on. This person had a photo from 1893.

Multi-Generational Photos

Here, you can see their grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and great-great-great-grandmother, all in one photo! In this small image, they managed to catch all four generations right after this person’s grandmother was born.

Having Fun

There are some things that simply don’t change no matter where you are in history. For instance, kids love having fun when really given the chance.

Having Fun

This picture actually captures a 4th of July celebration and, in particular, these kids during a watermelon-eating contest. As you might be able to tell from his gigantic grin and empty watermelon rind, this boy was dubbed the champion of the watermelon eating contest in Brooklyn in 1935.

We All Have Bad Days

When you see painted portraits of monarchs in history, they often look regal. After all, you’re seeing them when they’re paying someone to make them look their best.

We All Have Bad Days

When it comes to a photo, though, the image will capture you as you are. This little girl’s photo was taken back in the 1850s and it’s a little different from what you normally see. It seems like she’s completely bothered by the fact that she has to pose for this.

Ancient History

There are some times that you just can’t retrieve pictures from. No one had cameras back in Ancient Rome, right? Still, that’s not the only way someone can leave their mark.

Ancient History

While there may not be ancient Roman photographs, you can see photographs of evidence like this. It doesn’t take too much looking to notice that a child managed to step in this clay before it dried. Now, we can look at it more than 2,000 years later!

That’s More Space Than Expected

There are some things that seem like they always have been a certain way. You wouldn’t expect too much space on a plane, would you? After all, there are plenty of stories of people being crammed together on flights.

That’s More Space Than Expected

Maybe not so much back in the 1960s, though. The picture you see here is a group of passengers flying in Economy Class on a Pan Am 747 flight. That’s a lot more space than most people are used to today!

A Historic Moment

There are some pictures that seem like they could only happen if things line up just right. You have to take a second and wonder how the photographer managed to do that.

A Historic Moment

There’s clearly something going on in the background of this otherwise idyllic image. That’s because photographer Richard Lasher was riding his dirt bike in 1980 when he looked up and saw this wall of smoke. It was caused by the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

It’s Almost Cinematic

There are some images that you look at and you can only guess that they came out of a movie. You’d find this effect haunting enough for any pirate movie.

It’s Almost Cinematic

Believe it or not, this image is as real as every other one that we’ve looked at so far! Taken in 1900, the picture captures a ship emerging from a thick fog. That’s what gives this picture its ghostly but natural effect.

A Few Special Moments

A lot of photos capture a person’s face or maybe an image of their family. However, not every single picture tells us too much about the subject’s personality.

A Few Special Moments

This family photo, or set of them, is really endearing for how open and honest they are. Rather than just strict poses, we get to see a few shots of this mother-daughter duo in 1900 showing each other a bit of affection and having fun throughout the shoot.

Some Differing Moods Here

The first thing you probably notice about this picture is that this bride-to-be couldn’t look happier! She even has a bouquet of lilies for her big day.

Some Differing Moods Here

However, you might also notice that the person leaning out of the window hasn’t opened it themselves and there’s quite a bit of rubble in the yard. The bride is off to London in 1940 on November 4th after taking this picture outside of the family’s recently destroyed home.

A Real Tragedy

There are some events in history that seem almost like something from a movie at times. When you hear Titanic, you might even picture Leonardo DiCaprio before the ship itself.

A Real Tragedy

Yet, it’s important not to forget that this was a real tragedy. This picture captures an image of two of the survivors of this fatal ship sinking back in 1912. Their names are Marjorie and Charlotte Collyer and the picture was taken shortly after the tragedy took place.

Behind the Scenes

When you see celebrities, they’re often all done up and ready for the cameras to capture them. Still, they can’t be “on” all the time.

Behind the Scenes

Without things like a cellphone or even disposable cameras for quick photos, you might not have seen many of these unexpected behind-the-scenes appearances from celebrities. Someone snapped this more relaxed photo of Marilyn Monroe back in 1954. that’s not how you usually see her in photos!

Gone Fishing

There are some things that we still do that have been around for millennia. For instance, people have been fishing for dinner for centuries.

Gone Fishing

This picture shows an impressive catfish that Nora Washington caught in the Colorado River as it ran through Bastrop, Texas. This historic photograph was taken in the 1950s and if you look closely, you can see that Washington made her fishing rod out of a cane pole.

A Family Photo

There are some photos that really capture a moment in a family’s day. We’re guessing that this bench got a lot of use before it became a photoshoot prop. These three surely sat together on many mornings before this one.

A Family Photo

The picture you see here was taken in Worcester, Massachusetts, back about in 1900. As for the three kids sitting next to one another in near-matching outfits, that’s Lillian, Cora, and Luvenia Ward.

Ready for a Night Out

When you want to go for a night out, you might want to make sure your clothes, accessories, hair, and makeup are absolutely perfect before you hit the town.

Ready for a Night Out

The way that your grandmother gets ready now might not be exactly how she got ready when she was your age. We don’t always get the chance to see what that might have looked like. However, this person knew their grandmother’s style, thanks to this photo of her in 1947.

Man’s Best Friend

There are some members of the family that you can’t forget. So, you want to make sure that they’re included in some pictures for your family years later, right?

Man’s Best Friend

This boy made a bit of a mark on history when he was photographed with his dog. The two were photographed by a photographer named J.E. Williams somewhere in the later 1890s or early 1900s. The photoshoot took place in New Athens, Ohio.

We All Run Errands

There are some things we all have to do from time to time. After all, how are you going to get groceries if you don’t take a little time to grocery shop? How are you going to eat?

We All Run Errands

While strikingly different in a few remarkable ways, the general scene of a group of people grocery shopping in the 1960s isn’t all that unfamiliar. These women just wanted to get their shopping done and move on with their days.

Goofing Around

There are some things kids tend to love and have in common – no matter what decade you look at. For instance, they’re full of imagination and like to explore their environment, given the chance.

Goofing Around

That’s what it seems like this group was doing here. Taken back in the ’60s, there’s not much different here from a modern scene save for the black-and-white finish and the fashion. We wonder if there are still children doing stuff like this here decades later.

The Happy Couple

There are some people that you get used to seeing your whole life and, obviously, you picture them how they are or how they were the last time that you saw them.

The Happy Couple

This picture gives this family a chance to see what their grandparents looked like as a young couple, riding around town together. The image was taken of the two of them in 1952 while they were in Poland. This is a great one to have in the family photo album!

Breaking Barriers

Unfortunately, fair game and equality haven’t always been as valued in history as they should have been. For instance, the Boston Marathon wasn’t always open to women.

Breaking Barriers

Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to finish the Boston Marathon in 1967. It wasn’t an easy road either. There was no good sportsmanship here when some of the men in and organizing the race tried to stop her from finishing at all. Still, she went on to finish the race.

It’s New, Right?

Electric cars have recently been in the news a lot. It seems a bit futuristic when most of us have been used to the combustion engine for quite some time.

It’s New, Right?

This technology must be brand new to get so much attention, right? Well, there have actually been some ideas for electric cars for quite some time. Believe it or not, this is a photo from 1911 and that is an electric car charging in a New York garage.

In Full Color

When you look at photos from the past, you don’t always get to see all the details. After all, many are in black and white, so the color of things can be a bit of a mystery.

In Full Color

With modern technology, though, we aren’t as left in the dark about this. Thanks to Frédéric Duriez, this picture was taken in 1898 and got a second debut in full color. It shows a Bedouin couple from the Adwan tribe posing for the photographer outside of their tent.

Changes in Uniform

There are some professions that have been around for decades. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the positions are exactly the same over the years.

Changes in Uniform

For instance, as fashion and style norms change, the uniforms that employees wear may change as well. This picture shows a couple of flight attendants hard at work on a Southwest Airlines flight in 1972. Today, you probably see flight attendants in many different uniforms on flights.

The King at Home

There are some celebrities that seem like they manage to withstand the test of time. For goodness sake, there are still movies being made about Elvis Presley – even though his height is decades past.

The King at Home

You’re probably used to seeing pictures of The King in his iconic jumpsuits or boogying across the stage. However, this picture taken in 1959 captures him back at home with his dad, Vernon, and his grandmother, Minnie Mae.

Another Young Face

It’s not just musicians that you don’t always see when they’re really young. Some actors hit their stride when they’re older and are more recognizable later in their careers.

Another Young Face

We often think of John Wayne in his Western hits but this picture captured him a bit before he became an audience favorite in the genre. The actor is only 23 years old in this picture back in 1930. You almost don’t recognize this famous face at first!

Science on Film

There are some things that are magnificent to see, no matter what year they happened in. This picture shows a – quite literally – shocking image that’ll surprise you no matter when you see it.

Science on Film

The man sitting calmly under this calamity is none other than famed scientist and inventor, Nikola Tesla. The thing that’s causing this shocking effect is his magnifying transmitter. We can only guess he’s jotting down some notes as the magnificent magnifier goes to work.

A Terrifying View

There have always been people who look for more of a challenge and an adrenaline rush than others. These three were definitely looking for a bit of a rush.

A Terrifying View

The three of them were probably after showing off their skills too. If you think that it looks like they’re really high up, you’re right! This photo shows the trio doing a trick on the top of the Empire State Building back in 1934.

A Little Confusing

There are some changes throughout history that definitely took getting used to when the new way of things started to officially take effect. There are some changes that had to take effect all at once.

A Little Confusing

For instance, everyone has to be on the same page when it comes to traffic laws. However, there’s a bit of a learning curve to some changes. This picture shows people trying to adapt in 1967 when Sweden switched from driving on the left side of the road to the right.

Safety First

This picture features a little Dutch boy ice skating in 1933. As you can see, he has a pillow strapped to his bottom, in case he falls. Yes, the pillow is the life-saving tool, as opposed to a helmet.

Safety First

Of course, safety procedures today are way more adequate. However, some people would argue that kids today are a little too shielded from everyday falls, scrapes, and bruises. There’s got to be a middle ground, right?

Little Fashionistas

These two little ladies were quite the fashionistas! This photo was taken in 1887 and perfectly shows the attire of the time. Back then, there wasn’t really kids’ fashion. Children’s clothes were made the same as adult clothes just smaller.

Little Fashionistas

As adorable as these two look, we can’t imagine they were too comfortable in those outfits. How do you run around in those? We don’t know about you, but we prefer the Disney brand outfits of today.

To the Rescue!

This group of women was actually a team of female firefighters back in 1931, in London. The ladies’ ride is a converted motorcycle with a pretty cool sidecar. These women look like they’re ready to save the day!

To the Rescue!

Sure, the firetrucks of today are a lot more useful. However, we think these ladies are absolutely rocking the motorcycle look! We just feel bad that they essentially had to carry all their equipment. Well, they certainly made it work!

Bad Timing

This poor woman was photographed mid-sneeze. Nowadays, when something like that happens, you can just click another photo on your phone. In fact, you can have hundreds of pictures in seconds!

Bad Timing

Back then, though, getting your photo taken was a pretty rare and expensive ordeal. That’s why it’s so unfortunate that this lady sneezed during the photo. Chances are that she didn’t get to have a do-over. It certainly makes for an interesting picture, so there’s at least that.

A New Home

This is a photo of a family arriving at Ellis Island in 1904 to make their home in America. Yes, all those kids belong to just one set of parents! This family portrait is definitely larger than a typical family photo of today.

A New Home

This family is just one of many, though. Between 1892 and 1924, Ellis Island was the busiest and biggest immigration station in America, boasting over 12 million people being processed there.

Passing the Time

This woman is churning butter, which was quite the ordeal back in 1897. In fact, the process would take so long that it wasn’t uncommon for people to find other ways to occupy themselves while doing this tedious task.

Passing the Time

This particular lady chose to read a book to pass the time. We wonder what she was reading. Whatever it was, it was clearly so interesting that this woman didn’t notice the cat feasting on her work!

Survivors’ Remorse

This image is one of tragedy, but hope for those who made it. This is a picture of a lifeboat carrying the survivors of the Titanic, in 1912. Of course, the lifeboat consists primarily of women and children.

Survivors’ Remorse

Interestingly, it’s hotly debated whether the men willingly gave up the limited number of lifeboats for their families, or if the majority were forced to do so by other – braver – men. Only the people on those lifeboats know the truth.

Young Love

This picture, taken back in 1905, features a young couple on a date in Berlin. The pair are dressed fashionably and seem to be having a good time together. It’s certainly different than the dates people go on today!

Young Love

Let’s just say they didn’t exactly have Hinge back then. That said, there’s one thing budding couples of today have in common with the young loves of back then – the very real fear of getting ghosted.

Hard Workers

These young girls were cotton mill workers, back in 1909. Back then, childhood wasn’t viewed in the same way it is today. Children were seen as smaller adults and were sent out to the workforce as soon as they were physically able to earn money.

Hard Workers

Let’s just say there were no child labor laws back then. Seeing this picture, we can understand why people from older generations insist that the children of today have it so easy.

A Day at the Beach

These folks were enjoying a day at the beach in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1910. Well, ‘enjoying’ seems to be a pretty strong word given their attire. As you can see, these people are fully clothed while in the water.

A Day at the Beach

Back then, modesty was the most important thing. Covering one’s body took priority over fun, comfort, or the ability to move freely in the water. We’ll take our generation’s version of a beach day, instead!

Work in Progress

There are some structures that you see so often or they’re simply so iconic it’s hard to picture a locale without them. For instance, can you picture New York without the Statue of Liberty?

Work in Progress

This picture shows the statue while it was still a work in progress. This historical perspective is really one that you can’t get today and it shows just how much hard work went into this iconic emblem. It was still in Paris back in 1884!

A Piece of Cinema History

There are some movies that really gain a following after they’re released. Alien is one of the most famous science-fiction movies that’s ever been released. This is a behind-the-scenes picture of Bolaji Badejo.

A Piece of Cinema History

The design student played his only acting role in the film. Even if you’re a huge fan, you might not recognize him without looking at some behind-the-scenes footage. Badejo played the Alien itself!

Returning a Treasure

Throughout history, the famous pieces that you see from the Old Masters in art weren’t always completely safe where they are – it takes a lot of work to preserve them.

Returning a Treasure

The Louvre has long been a popular home for some of the most famous pieces of art in the world. The Mona Lisa simply wasn’t safe at some points in history, especially sitting in The Louvre. This picture shows the moment it returned to the museum.

It’s a Scary Job

There are some jobs that you see people doing that you really don’t envy. This is one job that you definitely wouldn’t want if you were even a little afraid of heights.

It’s a Scary Job

It looks like these four are just free climbing their way up the structure! If you want an idea of how high up they are, these men are painting part of the Eiffel Tower in 1932. Now’s not the time to look down!

Changing Channels

Not too long ago, people didn’t have the convenience of remote controls for their TVs. Instead of being able to change the channel from the comfort of their couch, folks were left to either get up all the time or, if they were lazy, sit through a program they didn’t want to see.

Changing Channels

The third option was to use a child as the designated remote control – this unpleasant task was usually reserved for the youngest sibling.

30 Household Items From the Roman Empire & How They Look Today

The Romans Were Surely Ahead of Their Time

It’s always a wonder to see how ancient civilizations made do with their daily lives as opposed to how it’s done in today’s world. They didn’t have the same type of creature comforts that are present today, but they did have the best of what was possible then. The Romans have always been good at doing their best with what they have, and it bettered their lives too during ancient times. Here are some everyday items used by the ancient Romans and how they differ from our version today.

Cutlery

Cutlery today comes in all shapes and sizes. From fancy china to simple plastic ones. Cutlery consists, of course, of spoons, forks, knives, etc. They’re used in almost every household and eatery you step in.

Cutlery

However, during the height of the Roman civilization, cutlery had a different look. Cutlery then was mostly made of brass. The Romans usually ate their meals with knives and spoons, with forks being introduced much later.

Combs

The Roman combs were two-sided objects with bristles on both sides. The delicate item was made out of ivory and had two different sets of teeth on each side, one with wider spaces than the other.

Combs

Today, we have combs that usually have teeth only on one side. There are a variety of combs available on the market, all dependent on your needs. Wide, fine-tooth, curling, whatever you need — there’s something for everybody.

Keys

The ancient Roman civilization was the first one to ever use keys similar to the one used in the modern era. The keys were mostly made of iron or bronze, sometimes even wood or ivory. The keys were all made manually, therefore, a locksmith had to be someone with great engineering knowledge.

Keys

Today, keys are usually made by machines and in bulk. Not only are they made a dime a dozen, but getting key copies is also extremely easy. Nowadays, they’re made of many common metals like brass, nickel, and steel.

Leather Shoes

The modern era’s leather shoes are a very popular choice of footwear amongst people. They’re available in real leather as well as faux leather. Depending on their make and model, they can be used for hiking, walking, and, of course, as formal wear.

Leather Shoes

In the Roman era, shoes were a lot less common, with most people wearing sandals. The sandals had leather soles attached to the bottom of the feet. They had laces that could be tied above the ankle. The Romans removed their shoes before reclining or feasting.

Kitchen Stoves

The Roman kitchen, which was called culina, was a study in olden inventions. They had a clay oven built in, with a type of burner on top. These stoves could only be heated using charcoal.

Kitchen Stoves

The modern kitchen, on the other hand, is a technological marvel. Stoves are either gas or electrical. Those easy-to-use, hassle-free stoves have made cooking anything much easier than it was in the olden days.

Soaps

Nobody can argue that soaps make our lives much easier. Today we have a variety of soaps in all sorts of scents and textures, and most importantly, we have body washes that make it all the better.

Soap

In Ancient Rome, soaps weren’t yet invented, but people did have a cleaning agent for their bodies. It was olive oil! People during those times put the oil on their bodies, and used a metal scraper to get any excess off. Not the easiest way to clean up, for sure.

Drinking Glassware

Roman glasses have found a place in history as some of the best-made glassware in the world. Today, they’re collector’s items worth a pretty penny. One of the most common techniques used to make glasses during that era was the “sagging glass” technique.

Drinking Glassware

This technique relies on gravity to create those unique round shapes. Today, most glasses used for drinking purposes are made in bulk by machines. They also come in a variety of materials like glass, copper, and ceramic.

Board Games

Board games in today’s day and age have no limit on what they can be. They use a variety of materials and props to be played. Board games today are designed with special attention to detail, even for something as small as dice.

Board Games

In the Roman era, board games were a much simpler concept. A slab of wood was usually used to make the board, while the pieces were made of precious stones or ivory.

Pots and Pans

Another everyday kitchen item used during Roman times was pots and pans. It was mostly made of terracotta or brass. The Romans were one of the first people to use pots and pans for cooking, even spearheading the process of frying fish in oil in a pan.

Pots and Pans

Today, pots and pans are used extensively in the kitchen. Pans come in a variety of styles — even non-stick ones so none of the food remains stuck on them, which the Romans would have probably loved to have.

Storage Containers

When we think of containers, we think of something that is fit for all sizes. Whether you have to carry some salt and sugar, or you want to carry an entire meal, you have a container for everything. They’re usually made from materials that are easy to heat in the microwave or store in the fridge.

Storage Containers

In the Roman era, storage containers were much bigger in size than your average Tupperware container. They were made with ceramic and were mostly used by farmers and merchants to store large quantities of goods such as grains and rice.

Cosmetic Mirrors

When we talk about antique mirrors, we usually imagine delicate oval-shaped mirrors with silver handles. But in reality, mirrors in the Roman Empire were actually made from silver, tin, or bronze which was polished to reflect light.

Cosmetic Mirrors

These days, mirrors are used on a variety of surfaces. There are travel mirrors, mirrors in makeup kits, and mirrors on your walls. One of the most trending styles currently is statement mirrors which are used extensively as decor items.

Clocks

Before the modern clocks were invented, humans used the sun as a way to track time. The way the shadow of the sun was pointing indicated what time it was. A stone slab cut in the shape of a clock was put up in places for people to track time.

Clocks

Nowadays, watches and clocks have become extremely advanced. You can have digital clocks or analog clocks. You can also opt for smart watches which sync up to your phone and perform all types of technological miracles.

Jewelry Sets

Just like it is in today’s time, the jewelry used during the Roman Era was used for two purposes — to add to the beauty of the wearer and to communicate the message of social status and wealth. It was usually made of precious stones.

Jewelry Sets

Jewelry today doesn’t only use precious stones. Even though big diamonds are still a symbol of wealth, everyday economical jewelry made out of plastic or cheap metals ans is more for styling purposes, is used extensively.

Shovels

The shovels used in Ancient Rome were called Batillium. These iron shovels had short handles and were used for multiple purposes like a chafing dish or for burning incense. They were popular during the Roman era.

Shovels

These days, shovels are usually designed to be easy and comfortable to hold and use. There are a variety of unique designs for different uses, such as edging, trenching, or tree-planting. Gardening has become such a widespread hobby that shovels now come in all shapes and sizes.

Musical Instruments

During the Roman era, commonly used instruments include the lure, the lute, and the Cithara. Music for the Romans wasn’t as popular as with the Greeks, but children and women were expected to know how to play at least some instruments.

Musical Instruments

Today, music is a major part of the world and is a booming industry within itself. The popular instruments of today include guitar, piano, violin, and drums amongst others. They come from the most basic version to as advanced as possible.

Newspapers

The first traces of newspapers in Roman history were daily official notices called Acta Diurna. These daily gazettes were carved on stones or metals and put up on message boards in public places. Since they relayed daily official notices, they’re the closest form of newspaper present in the Roman era.

Newspapers

Newspapers today can refer to the digital version or the paper version. Every region has not one newspaper specific to them but multiple.

Pens

Pens in the Roman era were used to write on items like papyrus, leaves, or wax tablets. The writing tools were made of metal or reeds. These little sticks were dipped in black ink. The ink was made of ingredients such as soot.

Pens

Pens in today’s age are much more modernized and mess-free to use. The dip-and-write has been replaced by a mechanism that lets you fill the ink to get that perfect calligraphic flow. There are also ready-to-use pens that are the preferred method for most people.

Paper

Paper today isn’t just a source of writing, it also has become a very important mode of communication. From posts to newspapers, everything was possible thanks to paper. Paper today is made from a large number of ingredients and is available very easily.

Paper

The Ancient Romans, on the other hand, used two types of items that qualify as paper. The first was based on papyrus, a plant that grew on the river Nile. The second type of paper was used with sheepskin. The Romans had books that helped preserve their history, but those were not readily available to most people.

Balls

Balls are a very important part of fun and games for children and adults alike, so it’s no surprise that they were also present in the Roman era. The balls in Ancient Rome were made of leather stuffed with horsehair and were in widespread use.

Balls

Today, these toys are made of different materials like leather and rubber. One of the most important and common denominators in both eras, modern and Roman, is that playing catch is one of the most popular and easy games to enjoy with a ball.

Perfumes

Vanity is a driving force behind many inventions, and perfume is one of them. In Roman times, these scented liquids were made using oil and fatty parts. For the more precious oils, olive oil and grape juice were the preferred choices.

Perfumes

Today, perfumes are made of ethanol or a mix of water and ethanol, and can be found in a variety of scents. Perfumes today are an everyday item, and can vary in cost from cheap knock-offs to expensive designs, depending on the brand.

Skin Creams

It turns out that when it came to skincare, ancient humans were nothing if not creative and resourceful. To make their skin softer, the Roman civilization used creams made of wheat flour and donkey’s milk. Even crushed snails were a type of cream.

Skin Creams

Thankfully, we moved ahead of using such raw ingredients (though snail mucin is still a popular ingredient in certain creams). You get everything from aloe vera to rose, water-based to milk-based, all in an effort to keep our skin moisturized and glowing.

Blushes/Lipsticks

Another important component of a woman’s cosmetic kit are blushes and lipsticks. These items are used to highlight one’s cheeks and lip color, to make them appear brighter and fuller.

Blushes/Lipsticks

Today, you can get lipsticks and blushes in a range of shades and kinds, like liquid and powder. However, for the early Romans, it wasn’t so easy. These olden people used red ochre to add color to their faces to make their cheeks rosy and their lips red.

Pillows

Pillows are a necessary need in life for most people, as it gives one a place to rest their head and get a good night’s sleep. Today, you can get a pillow based on your choice of softness, hardness, and thickness. Pillows are usually filled with feathers, down, synthetic materials, or a combination of those.

Pillows

Ancient Romans also had pillows during their time, but they were slightly different than today’s version. These pillows were stuffed with cotton, reed, or straw. Not the most comfortable option, but any pillow is better than no pillow.

Fishing Equipment

There are many ways one can fish — with a pole, with a net, some even like to get creative and use their hands. But, have you heard of people fishing with a three-pronged spear? Because it seems like that was the preferred method of the Ancient Romans.

Fishing Equipment

Also known as tridents, these tools were used by fishermen and sailors to catch fish, which they later sold in markets to make some money or ate themselves.

Chairs

Chairs are a commonplace item now, found in a variety of sizes, and in every country in the world, they are an essential part of most households. Today, they’re made of wood or metal, and have a flat top that is cushioned for more support.

Chairs

However, back in the Roman Civilisation, such chairs hadn’t yet been invented. What was used instead were curule seats, which were basically stools with a curved top.

Bags

The Romans were the first people to use cross-body bags (we do have a lot to thank them for). The bags, which were basically satchels known as Loculus, were carried by people as part of their luggage while traveling. Most likely, this bag was made of leather.

Bags

Today, cross-body bags are a very popular choice among women and men alike. They are no longer limited to being a satchel, instead, they are flourishing in all shapes, sizes, and colors.

Oil Lamps

Oil lamps aren’t something that is in widespread use today as electricity has made lighting every nook and cranny very easy. But, in remote places where there is no electricity, the oil lamps used are usually made of glass.

Oil Lamps

Back in the ancient days, before electricity was invented, oil lamps were an everyday item. The lamp itself was made with pottery, and only had one wick for lighting. It was the most popular airitical light source used during the time.

Bells

In ancient times, bells were used for many purposes, like calling out to people or signaling the time. And they looked exactly like you would expect an ancient bell to look like. The bells were made of bronze and were cylindrical in shape.

Bells

The most common bells used today are the doorbell, which is used to signal somebody at the door, and the school bell, signaling the end of class. They are, more often than not, electrical.

Hair Pins

The Roman women had elaborate hairstyles that they created, in part, thanks to hairpins. The Roman hairpin was also called a bone pin. They were made from everything from bone and ivory, to silver and bronze. One of the bone pins found during excavation had been 12 cm long.

Hair Pin

Today, hair pins are much more versatile in their nature, but the most commonly used ones are made of metal and are black in nature.

Umbrellas

Though umbrellas technically weren’t invented until modern times, the ancient Romans had a close enough item called umbraculum. These things were made of leather and were used by women to protect themselves from the sun. These were most often used by people from higher social standing.

Umbrellas

Umbrellas today are used to keep people safe from the sun, but their main purpose is to provide shelter from the rain. Umbrellas are also a style statement that complete many outfits.
