Travel Horror Stories That Make Us Want to Stay Home

One of the most fun things you can do is get out into the world and explore it. But, it’s not all beautiful pictures and stunning sunsets when you’re traveling. Being away from home and our comfort zone means that a whole lot of things can go horribly wrong. While we love a good travel story, we like a bad travel story even more. We’ve compiled a list of stories of people’s worst travel experiences. These definitely make us appreciate staying home!

Leaving Things Behind

Sometimes, it just feels like bad luck follows you on a trip. Forgetting things is something that many people do when they’re traveling, and that is why they double-check everything before they exit the door of their home.

Leaving Things Behind

If he had had this checklist, he might not have spent so much money on cabs to ensure he had everything he needed to get to where he was going. It probably would have saved him time and a lot of anxiety, too!

No Baggage

When you travel with kids, there are many more things to check off your list. Because of this, people find their first trip as a family to have a few horror stories attached. This family had one of the worst ones for sure.

No Baggage

Finding out that your luggage was still at home seems crazy to us. But, then again, without sleep and all the extra stuff to consider, it might be more common than one might think.

Right On Time

One of the hardest things to do is determine your timing when it comes to getting to the airport. Some try to get there super early, and others want to get there moments before the plane leaves. So, figuring out how to plan your time can be very challenging.

Right On Time

This couple clearly didn’t have it on point, and we’re sure that the next time they’ll figure it out. After all, you can’t get to the airport when your flight is about to leave!

Cutting the Line

Kids don’t always understand the rules of what can and can’t go into their luggage. They get really excited about sharing things with family members, so sometimes, questionable things get stored away in that baggage.

Cutting the Line

We’re not sure why this kid thought bringing a pair of scissors to their grandma’s house was a necessity, but clearly, their parents had pretty strong feelings when they had to get pulled to the side as they went through security!

Wrong Date

As someone who’s done a lot of traveling, it’s very important to ensure that before you hit that purchase button, you’ve rechecked every single aspect of the information.

Wrong Date

Maybe one of the most important things is making sure you put the right date in. If you don’t, you’ll be pretty embarrassed when you arrive at the airport and have to explain to everyone why you missed your flight!

So Cheesy

Often, when you visit a place, you want to bring a souvenir home to friends and family. If you’re into food, that could very well be specialty foods from the area you have just visited. Or maybe you’re visiting home and just want a little touch of it to come back with you.

So Cheesy

But, you have to ensure it’s not going to cause a problem in the line, and this person clearly didn’t do that. Even worse, this TSA agent seems to have had this problem before, which seems strange to us.

Chucking it Up

Sometimes, when people fly, they get kind of nervous, which can lead to many bad situations. This is especially true if you’re not really comfortable with flying. We can understand why it might be a little stressful.

Chucking it Up

This poor guy not only had to deal with the stress of flying but also the stress of being the guy who puked in a jump seat. That had to be horrifying!

Where Are You?

Being a part of a friend or a family member’s wedding is an honor that not everybody gets to have. So, when you’ve got the invitation and RSVP’d, you need to ensure you’re there when it’s time to go.

Where Are You?

This guy must have felt so bad when he got that call. On the other end, we’re sure this friend is questioning how much their friendship actually meant.

Saving a Few Bucks

Traveling for a long time often means having a few extra pieces of luggage with you. Taking all of that on an airplane can be very pricey, so some people have found ways around it.

Saving a Few Bucks

Though this seems like a great idea, it didn’t really work out in the end. So, maybe it would’ve been easier to take that luggage with you instead of saving a few dollars…

So Long

Traveling by plane is often the fastest and most reliable way to get somewhere far away… As long as everything goes smoothly. That is, unless you experience delays from the weather or technology not working properly.

So Long

We feel bad for this guy; missing your own birthday party sounds like a real bummer. That had to suck! But, at least he could have a little time with his family, even if it wasn’t face-to-face.

Showing it All

If you’ve ever been in an airplane bathroom, you know there’s not a lot of room, and you feel every little air pocket when you’re there. The last thing you want to do is have the door fly open while you’re trying to relieve yourself.

Showing it All

But, that’s just what happened to this guy. We just hope that the person that got to see all of him didn’t have a bad reaction. Hopefully, there weren’t many people staring; otherwise, it could make for an uncomfortable rest of the flight!

Missing a Shoe

In some airports, when you’re going through the security checkpoint, you have to take your shoes off so that you can go through the X-ray machine.

Missing a Shoe

But, when you put things through, you expect everything to come out the other side without any problems. We’re glad that this guy got his other shoe back!

On the Ground

When traveling, you’re often at the mercy of nature. Sometimes, that means volcano eruptions and earthquakes can cause a bit of a delay and leave you not enjoying your vacation.

On the Ground

It’s very unfair that this person spent two days in the airport because of this. On the other hand, part of that is their fault too, so one lesson to learn is not to drink so much when you’re stuck at the airport!

Uncomfortable

When you’re traveling a long distance, you will inevitably have connections you have to meet. One of the most stressful parts of travel is being unable to make that connection due to delays that are out of your control.

Uncomfortable

That, coupled with being hounded by some weird guy, can make for a pretty unpleasant flight. We feel bad for this person, and we hope that they were able to make that connection and find a way to get rid of the creeper!

Stuck in Baltimore

When one travels during the winter months, especially in places that are known for their snow, it has to be expected that you might get stuck at some point. When this happens, you just hope you’re stuck in a place where you can find food.

Stuck in Baltimore

It had to suck for this poster, and we feel bad for them. After all, being unable to find a hotel or flights out means you’re stuck with whatever is open in the airport!

Delayed!

Some people have access to airport lounges, making layovers and delays much more enjoyable. But, we’re not quite sure having a good lounge is going to make up for an eight-hour delay and the fact that there were no bags when they got to their destination.

Delayed!

At least, though, it could have been another horror story if they hadn’t. So maybe these travelers should just look on the bright side. It could have been way worse.

Proper Etiquette

When you’re a solo traveler that doesn’t travel with kids, being cooped up in a plane for hours with someone who is can be annoying at best. Kids have a problem sitting still on long trips like this, which can get quite annoying unless the parents can control them.

Proper Etiquette

We completely understand why this guy was frustrated with not only the kid, but his very annoying and rude family, too. If we’re honest, we would have been too!

11 Hours Later

One of the main contributors to having a delayed flight is the weather. When thunderstorms or snowstorms occur, it’s hard for planes to see; therefore, they are often delayed.

11 Hours Later

Instead of having a simple three-hour flight, this poor person ended up spending half of their day in the airport. On top of that, not having access to any comforts like good food and stuff has to mean they were pretty hangry when they got to their destination.

Where’s My Bag?

A lot of people like heading out and doing solo adventures nowadays. Often, when they do this, they just pack a simple backpack with the bare minimum, so they don’t have to worry about lugging a bunch of luggage around.

Where’s My Bag?

But, when you do that, you run the risk as this person did of winding up getting to your destination and not having your backpack. This is why we never check our backpack and always carry it on.

Closed!

Many hotels advertise their more private rooms on Airbnb to ensure they get their space in front of as many people as possible. You can also book many different things, but the one definite thing is that you expect them to be open when you get there.

Closed!

We would have been so mad if we got there and our hotel was closed. There would have been a quick call to Airbnb and a dispute. We just hope they found other accommodations!

We Need a Doctor

As travelers, most of us know that the worst thing to happen to you when traveling is getting sick. With the language barrier and the whole insurance thing, it can be quite challenging to find a good doctor that can help you.

We Need a Doctor

It has to be even scarier when it’s this bad. We’re just glad that nothing like this has ever happened to us, and we hope this person got the help they needed.

Next Hospital!

When you’re in an emergency situation, and you need to get from your hotel to a hospital, the last thing you want to have to think about is trying to find one that’ll take you. It has to be very scary and frustrating to be sent from hospital to hospital.

Next Hospital!

The fact that this person had this experience had to be pretty stressful. On top of that, the fact that these hospitals only work a nine-to-five seems pretty weird to us…

Wrong Time

The coolest thing about traveling is setting up excursions that have you experiencing things you would never experience anywhere else. But, this takes a lot of planning and extra care to make sure everything goes according to plan.

Wrong Time

Though we feel bad that this couple missed this opportunity, we also think they should have ensured everything was properly settled before hitting the “book” button.

My Cell Phone Is Gone

There are many places across the world where you have to keep track of your property when you’re visiting them. In many major cities, pickpocketing is something that you have to be alert about at all times.

My Cell Phone Is Gone

We feel bad for this person because not only did they get violated like this, but they didn’t have any way to call or find people to help because of the language barrier. Traveling can be challenging!

Locked Out

One of the most embarrassing things to do is to have to call someone to help you get your keys out of your car or out of your home. It’s even more embarrassing when you’re doing it while you are abroad, especially when it’s in the middle of winter!

Locked Out

It had to be pretty awkward for these people, but we’re sure someone eventually helped them out! Hopefully, the rest of their vacation was a lot less unlucky.

SPIDER!

It is pretty well known that a whole multitude of large insects and animals can be quite dangerous to you in Australia. So, when traveling in the country, you have to be cautious wherever you are.

SPIDER!

Given that, we can totally understand why this person was so afraid when they turned the lights on and saw something like this. We would have been, too!

Cancel Everything

Sometimes, when you’re creating your itinerary for a trip, you have a laundry list of things you want to get done. But, just because they’re on your list doesn’t necessarily always mean you’re going to be able to do them.

Cancel Everything

The weather is kind of inevitable. So, whenever you’re trying to plan any outdoor activity, you have to be okay with knowing that it might not happen. We feel bad for this person who paid all that money to get to New Zealand, but at least they got to see some beautiful things!

No Signal

Nowadays, when traveling, many people rely on their smartphones to get them from place to place. But, there are some places in the world where all that technology just doesn’t work, and unfortunately, these people found one.

No Signal

It had to be pretty stressful to realize they had gotten a little bit lost, but at least they were someplace where it was beautiful, and the scenery could keep them smiling while they tried to figure out how to get back to civilization.

Behind You!

For some people, one of the thrills when it comes to doing more outdoorsy traveling is seeing the wildlife in their natural habitat. But, they probably don’t want to see them as up close and personal as this person did.

Behind You!

We’re not sure why she didn’t turn around when 30 people kept yelling at her. No matter where we were, if these many people were yelling at us, we hopefully would have acted a bit quicker.

Stray Attack

Many countries across the world have an issue when it comes to stray animals, whether that be dogs or cats. Some of these countries have really taken the task seriously and treat their strays very well.

Stray Attack

However, even if they treat them well, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all of them will behave. We would have been so frightened if we had to deal with this angry dog, and we hope that everything turned out okay in the long run!

Life-Threatening Event

Traveling can be amazing, and sometimes it can be dangerous. Depending on where you’re going, you may find yourself in countries or cities with high crime rates and desperate criminals.

Life-Threatening Event

We would have been so frightened if we were these people. This is definitely making us reconsider any future trips to this city — we might just stick to staying at home.

Temporary Shut Down

There are many beautiful towns on the western coast of Turkey, and one of the many places to visit is Kas. We can understand why someone would want to visit there and then head down to Fethiye.

Temporary Shut Down

We would be upset if we got there and discovered that our reservation was canceled because they were temporarily shutting down. It just seems like bad business for the new management to do this!

Listen to the Locals

Sometimes when we’re traveling, we think we know better than the locals, and that’s because we’re trying to be as self-confident and self-efficient as possible. But, there’s no shame in taking some advice from the locals.

Listen to the Locals

After all, they know the area way better than we all do! If this guy had done that, he might not have been in this really annoying situation.

No Caves for You

In many parts of the world, spring brings tons of rain, which inevitably means that there are rivers and other waterways around floods. So, when you’re planning a seven-day trip to someplace like this, it’s not surprising if things go a little astray.

No Caves for You

However, the people running this attraction should be a little bit better when it comes to letting people know things are going to get canceled. We would have been very upset with this company if this had happened to us!

Wrong Requirement

Travel brings a bunch of things you must consider, including the requirements for entry into each country. Each country has its own checklist, from visas to medical information.

Wrong Requirement

When you’re traveling, you should probably take the time to ensure everything works. Otherwise, you’re going to wind up stuck in the airport and having some pretty uncomfortable conversations.

Sick of it All

We’ve all heard the stories of people getting horribly sick from eating food or drinking water in certain countries. These might be stories but they’re also very true, and you have to be cautious.

Sick of it All

We think it’s great that these travelers wanted to try the street food, but they also need to ensure they hydrate and be cautious of where they get that food. Otherwise, you’re going to wind up sick as this person did.

Slip and Slide

Depending on the altitude levels, you might feel a little nauseous when you’re traveling in the mountains. This must have been what the person thought when the nausea first hit.

Slip and Slide

But, you have to be cautious because other things can cause this symptom. We don’t know how long it took them to get down, but we’re sure it wasn’t a fun trip down that mountain!

So Thirsty

Backpacking can be one of the coolest ways to travel around the world. But, when you’re backpacking, you’re going to be walking a lot, so many people suggest keeping bottled water near you.

So Thirsty

On top of that, clean water sadly isn’t accessible everywhere. But, when super thirsty, we understand why this guy needed to drink a little water. But, he also needs to understand that that means he risks getting a little sick.

Too Much Fun

Horror travel stories don’t always happen because of things in your control. Sometimes, it happens because other people don’t take their jobs seriously and wind up being too hungover to work properly.

Too Much Fun

We’re sure this 11-year-old will never forget this story. And we’re sure that the flight attendant won’t either!

Not the Same

When it comes to relations between countries, one of the areas where things differ is the necessary visa requirements. Thinking that your visa requirement is the same as someone else was a little naive.

Not the Same

But, like with everything else, traveling will lead to some mistakes. We just hope that this was the worst of those mistakes that were made during this trip.

Here’s Your Sign

When you’ve just arrived at a destination, and you’re trying to get from the airport to your hotel or even just trying to get around a city, taxis can be quite helpful. But, like with many other things, there can also be a lot of scammers involved in this.

Here’s Your Sign

We understand why this person made a mistake, but next time they need to think about asking how much the taxi will be before they get in. It’s a sure bet that this will help them suss out the real taxi drivers from the fake ones.

Throwing it Away

Throwaway tickets are something many people use to save a little bit of money. It’s also a great way to accumulate points and mileage, but you have to really know how to use them.

Throwing it Away

This guy clearly was not adept at executing this type of scheme, and maybe next time he just needs to go more on the up and up and stick with traditional tickets.

Not What I Expected!

Though many horror stories have to do with the actual plane rides and being stuck in airports, plenty of other horrifying travel stories have nothing to do with actual transportation. This one is probably one of the worst!

Not What I Expected!

We would have been very surprised to come face to face with the fur seal instead of wild dolphins. But, we also question why someone wants to jump into a freezing ocean just to swim with some dolphins!

Open That Letter

When you have been given something that’s super cool, you want to share it with everybody. That means if you’re going on a trip, you want to have it with you so that you can show off your cool gadget no matter who you talk with.

Open That Letter

Someone needed to tell this guy that taking a small mini sword with them really isn’t the best idea. We’re sure that there was quite an interesting conversation with security.

Don’t Panic!

For many people, the reason that they’re afraid of flying is that they worry about things going wrong while they’re on the plane. That’s definitely not an irrational fear, in our opinion.

Don’t Panic!

But, apparently, if you’re on a plane and this happens, there’s not as much panic as one might expect. We don’t know how we would have felt, whether we would have been happy that the pilot seemed to have everything in charge or worried that they weren’t as concerned as they should be.
