Ten years is a long time. Can you believe that it was just ten years ago that Landon Donovan’s goal in the 90th-minute playing against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup set the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team to the knockout stage? That was only one of the greatest sports moments to happen during the past decade. Here are some others you might remember as they shaped the decade:
1. Simone Biles Dominating U.S. Gymnastics Championships
She made sports history in the 2010s and became the first-ever female gymnast to land a triple-double. Biles also became only 1 of 3 people who have attempted the move. Between 2013 and 2019, Biles won 19 gold medals at the World Championships.
2. Kobe Bryant Retires After a 20-Year NBA Career and 60-Point Game
The 2010 decade was one where Kobe Bryant dominated both on and off the court. Kobe retired in 2016, but not without a bang. In his last game, he put up 60 points and became the first player to end his career doing so. During his time in the NBA, he helped his team win five championships with the Lakers and made history doing so. Unfortunately, at the start of the new decade, both Kobe and his daughter Gianna lost their lives in a devastating helicopter crash.
3. UMBC Makes College Basketball History
Before the 2018 NCAA men’s basketball tournament, a No.16 team had never beaten a No. 1 team. However, the UMBC Retrievers made college sports history when they beat Virginia in a game-ending 74-54.
4. “The Catch” by Odell Beckham Jr.
In a game playing against the Dallas Cowboys in 2014, Odell Beckham Jr. made an incredible catch for the New York Giants, and it will live on forever to be one of the greatest ones in the decade. He managed to do so one-handedly while not only diving backward but also getting interfered with.
5. Serena Williams Wins the Australian Title While Pregnant
A few months after her Australian Title win in January 2017, Serena Williams let her fans know via Snapchat that she was 20 weeks pregnant. Fans calculated and realized she was pregnant during her game.
