There hardly is a sports lover out there who hasn’t come across the name of Roger Federer. Even if you’re not a tennis fan per se, you can’t deny the greatness of a man who’s done what no one else in history has. During what many say is his “late period,” Roger always finds a way to come out stronger. The latest rabbit out of his hat has been his new tennis-inspired sneakers, made in partnership with On, the cult Swiss athletics company.

At first glance, Roger’s iconic tennis shoe looks surprisingly like a classic, sort of old-school tennis sneaker. You shouldn’t be fooled by the classic elegance, however, because there’s loads of new technology ‘under the hood.’ The Roger, as it’s been named, is a lifestyle shoe, not one to hit the court with. It’s part of the Centre Court 0-Series, which means there will be many more to come.

In an interview about the release of the limited edition, Roger Federer called them ‘a future classic’ and said he really hopes to one day be able to create a tennis shoe he can wear while playing on the court. There were a couple of key points in creating The Roger. He really wanted them to be lightweight, to have On’s signature speedboard on the bottom (see the picture above), CloudTex soles, and to hint to the past (ergo the white color and traditional design).

Who knows? With the pro tennis circuit put indefinitely on hold due to the global health crisis, there’ll be some time until Roger Federer graces the courts again. Perhaps he might use the time to design his next sneaker to use on the court. One can only hope, eh? On has released a limited edition of The Roger with just 1,000 pairs, so only a few lucky ones will get their hands on these brand new babies.
